Wolves and Como played a behind-closed-doors friendly in Marbella in pre-season. The game ended 1-0 in favour of the Premier League side but was overshadowed by an incident in the 68th minute when Hwang Hee-chan accused defender Marco Curto of racial abuse.

Angered on Hee-chan’s behalf, teammate Daniel Podence attacked Como’s defender and was sent off by the referee. The incident became serious when both Wolves and the Korea Football Association complained to FIFA about Marco Curto’s behavior.

After a three-month investigation, FIFA has officially convicted Marco Curto and imposed a very heavy penalty on the Como star. Accordingly, the 25-year-old defender was suspended for 10 matches and had to perform community service.

“Marco Curto was found guilty of racist behaviour and has been suspended for 10 matches. The player will also be required to undertake community service and an educational course at a FIFA-approved institution,” a FIFA spokesperson said.

The Korean Football Federation also complained about this incident to UEFA, but the European Football Federation refused to consider it because it was not an official UEFA match.

Wolves have welcomed FIFA’s ruling, while Como has expressed his frustration. A representative of the Serie A club previously said: “After a meeting with the player, we understand that he was only referring to another player by name. He did not say anything offensive. We are disappointed that the overreaction of some Wolves players has caused the incident to be blown out of proportion.”
